Tattooer/Piercer Jay Plecas
Jay was born in Grand Rapids, MI in 1989. He has been fascinated with tattoos and body modification since he was young. As a child he often drew what he thought he would want as a tattoo when he was old enough. He considers tattooing to be a beautiful craft and loves everything about it; from the design process, application, and even the history of tattooing as well. He is amazed by it on many levels. He is actually quite the scholar of traditional tattooing history. His knowledge of it spans to many parts of the globe as well...quite impressive.
Jay and some friends came to A.W.O.L. back in 2008 to get graduation tattoos. That's when Jay and Ray met each other. They have since become friends. He had dabbled for years in tattooing but had been thinking about doing an apprenticeship. He hemmed and hawed about whether he should or not until 2018 he was finally convinced by a stranger to bite the bullet and follow his dream.
He says that he couldn't be happier, is honored, and blessed to be part of A.W.O.L. and the tattoo community. He wants to learn all styles of tattooing as his skill set grows but traditional will always have his heart. He is one of the most proficient tattooers of the traditional style in West Michigan and he continues to become more so over time.
He is also an avid supporter of tattoo machine builders. He has been amassing a small collection of non corporate machines built by machinists from around the country. He follows many builders from around the globe closely as well. We'll get him out into the workshop one of these days. :)
